How We Test

A transparent framework for researching, evaluating and comparing consumer neurotechnology without pretending research-based analysis is hands-on testing.

Our testing principles

A useful device review should answer more than “does it turn on?” Our methodology is designed around the questions a buyer actually needs answered before spending money.

Not every article involves hands-on testing. When a device has not been physically tested by Neuro Device Lab, we say so and base the evaluation on documented specifications, primary sources, available research and clearly attributed consumer feedback.

1. Product research

Before comparing products, we verify the fundamentals wherever possible using manufacturer documentation and other primary sources: current price, included accessories, session format, app requirements, subscriptions, charging or battery requirements, warranty, returns and availability.

Marketing statements are treated as manufacturer claims unless independently supported.

2. Hands-on evaluation

When we have physical access to a device, our evaluation can include setup time, pairing, controls, fit, comfort, placement, session friction, portability, charging, app usability and the practical effort required to use the product consistently.

No simulated hands-on testingWe do not describe a product as “tested,” “used for weeks,” or personally experienced unless that evaluation actually occurred. Research-based comparisons and hands-on reviews are labeled according to what was really done.

3. Scientific evidence

Neuromodulation requires careful language. Evidence supporting vagus nerve stimulation or transcutaneous VNS in general does not automatically prove that every consumer device produces the same outcomes.

We therefore separate three questions: what evidence exists for the underlying technology; what evidence exists for the particular stimulation approach; and what evidence, if any, directly evaluates the commercial device being discussed.

4. Price and long-term cost

Sticker price is only part of value. We consider recurring subscriptions, conductive gels or sprays, replacement accessories and other ongoing costs when they are relevant. Because pricing changes, articles may include a “price checked” date and readers should confirm the current offer before purchasing.

5. Consumer feedback

Public customer feedback can reveal recurring questions about fit, setup, apps, shipping or support. We may use those patterns to identify issues worth investigating, but anecdotes are not treated as clinical evidence and individual reports are not presented as proof that a device will produce the same result for everyone.

6. How we compare devices

Usability

Setup, controls, app friction and how easily the device fits into a routine.

Comfort

Placement, fit, hands-free or handheld use and session practicality.

Features

Programs, controls, app functions, portability and useful differentiation.

Evidence

Quality and relevance of support for the technology and, when available, the device itself.

Value

Purchase price, recurring costs and what the buyer receives for the money.

Support

Warranty, return policy, documentation and customer-support considerations.

7. How recommendations are made

Our goal is not to declare one device universally “best.” A recommendation should explain the trade-off. One product may offer better value or hands-free convenience, while another may suit a buyer who prioritizes compact size or shorter sessions.

When we identify a product as a stronger fit for a particular type of buyer, the reasoning should be visible in the comparison rather than dependent on an unexplained score.
